Photographer Nikki Johnson’s style is unique. She studied extensively as a painter as well as a photographer, and it shows in her use of exposure to create subtle washes of light around the subjects in each piece. Although she does not choreograph the subjects within her work, she pays special attention to light to envelop her subjects in a revealing glow that illuminates cluttered apartments, neon-bathed streets, and occupied beds. In her choice of subject matter, Johnson’s portraits are, by her own description," messy and complicated." She divides a large part of her photographic work between what she terms "passive-aggressive" portraiture and self-portraiture, and an ongoing series of documentary images from around the world. Her subjects are often represented in unusually intimate moments.

Nikki Johnson is a Mississippi native living in NYC's Lower East Side. She earned a Masters degree in Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, and a BFA at Mississippi University for Women. In 2005, Johnson was the first photographer to receive a residency at The Henry Street Settlement's Artist in Residence program.
